SLOG has the details on Andrew Hughes, the politician who’s trying to unseat incumbent Seattle Congressman Jim McDermott with a call to amend the U.S. Constitution!

Here is Hughes’s proposed amendment:

The right of citizens of the United States to marry shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex, race, gender, or sexual orientation.

Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.

It’s awesome to see the tables turned on religious conservatives, but I don’t have much faith this would get much traction.

This just in from the Seattle Times:

Opponents of gay marriage said Wednesday they have reached the number of signatures needed to qualify a proposed referendum seeking to overturn a new law legalizing same-sex marriage in Washington state, and that they may turn them in as early as next Tuesday.

Can’t say this wasn’t expected especially after 2008′s anti-gay referendum, R-71.  Luckily, the gay rights group Washington United for Marriage has been preparing a long time for this battle and is well prepared, probably more so than those in Maryland.  It would be great for both amendments in Maryland and Washington to fail, and with poll numbers like these we have a great chance!
